So, you’ve created a great website for your business. You’ve added all the necessary pages, including a bit about you and your services.

However, you’re still finding it hard to drive traffic to your new site. No one is looking at it – and you’re still not getting those juicy inbound leads.

If that sounds like you, a blog could be the answer! A blog is a dedicated space on your website, where you can expand on your products, share tips and tricks, and tell your readers about your story.

You can sell your products and build thought leadership – all while ensuring your website pops up in more searches online. That means more views, more clicks, and (hopefully) more leads!

Good-quality, evergreen content stays on your blog forever, gaining traffic and bringing in new customers. Once you add a blog section to your website, it’s always there, working for you, even while you’re busy with something else.

I’ve put together some of the many benefits of adding a blog to your website, including tips from my 8+ years of blogging!

The benefits of adding a blog to your website

There are plenty of benefits to adding a blog to your business website. You can reach out to new readers – and maybe turn some of them into customers. Let’s take a closer look.

1. Help your readers

First and foremost, your blog is a space to help your readers with their queries – and show them that you can provide the answers.

You can use your blog to give advice about common problems your readers may face. You can offer your product as the solution, of course, but not before you actually help them first.

This is a great opportunity to explain your products or tell your story. Web copy is fantastic, but it can only do so much. Your blog is a space to answer burning questions and create content that readers know they can trust.

Your first blog post might not lead to a sale, but you’ll establish your authority. Then, when a customer is ready to buy, who do you think they’ll come to?

2. Reach out to new customers

A blog is a fantastic way to reach out to new customers. When a reader types in a query related to one of your blog posts, your site may pop up, leading them to your information (and consequently, your services).

If you find it hard to drive traffic through your website, a blog could be just the thing to boost your numbers and bring people to your site.

For my personal blog, search engines are always my largest traffic referrer. That’s a huge number of people who find, click and read my blog without me having to do anything at all.

3. Build your thought leadership

Thought leadership is all about establishing yourself as an authority in your industry. Google (and humans) love to see experts sharing real help, so a blog is one of the best ways to do that.

Social media is a great place to build thought leadership, especially with the rise of LinkedIn and other long-form, community-based platforms.

However, your blog can be just as valuable. You can really get into a topic, pick it apart, and offer the best advice for all of your readers – even those who don’t use social media.

You don’t own your social media accounts, so they can be blocked or removed at any time. A blog, however, is all yours. You can use it to build your website’s online presence, share authority and let your personality shine through!

How can I make the most of my blog?

Creating a blog is a great way to boost your traffic and reach out to new customers, but how can you get started? Let’s take a look.

1. Focus on value over sales

Value always comes first. We all hate it when businesses go in for the hard sell, and the same goes for your blog. Show your readers that you know your stuff – and that you can actually help them.

Take this blog post as an example. I’ve provided you with the benefits of adding a blog to your website, as well as some tips to get started yourself. I’ll mention my blog writing services, in case you need support, but the value of the post comes first.

2. Create a consistent posting schedule

You don’t have to post every day or even every week, but create a posting schedule that works for you – and stick to it.

You can build up a large bank of content and start attracting customers to you. Once you’ve created a blog post, you can also repurpose your content, using it to create new social media posts, newsletters or even videos!

3. Think about search engines

… but remember that humans are the ones actually reading your posts! Good SEO practices are important, as they’ll ensure your blog posts rank on Google.

However, your readers are human, so avoid writing solely for search engines. Your blog posts need to be genuinely helpful, not just stuffed full of keywords. They need to feel human (which means avoiding AI-generated content, too).

Write posts that you feel good about, include plenty of useful information, and always put your audience first. What do they want to read about? How can your products or services help them?
